A SPEECH PRESENTED BY CHIEF FELIX KUPA, THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF NBM OF AFRICA ON THE 9TH OF NOVEMBER, 2016 DURING THE ORGANIZATIONS VISIT TO IKOYI PRISONS IN RESPECT OF THEIR PRO BONO LEGAL SERVICE AND PRISONS DE-CONGESTION INITIATIVE
NBM of Africa, is out today to pursue one of its objectives.
It is one of the fundamental objectives and directive principles of NBM of Africa to strive to eradicate all forms of oppression, intimidation, corruption, injustice, neo-colonialism and other vices from society. This is where the Nigerian Prison Inmate (especially those awaiting trial) come in. The Nigeria criminal justice system is such that in a prison of over 2,000 inmates, only about 300 would be convicted. This is totally unacceptable as it is a clear case of injustice. We all know that justice delayed is justice denied.
It is on this bases that NBM of Africa has resolved to channel its humanitarian services in this direction. I and my team are here today with a view to contributing our own quota towards solving this problem.
• We are going to mobilize our legal team towards offering free legal services to inmates who cannot afford the services of lawyers.
• Our legal team shall also write protest letters on behalf of inmates awaiting trials who have probably stayed beyond the period they would have ordinary served if convicted for the offenses for which they are charged.
• We may also consider assisting inmates to pay fines for minor offenses.
• Our welfare team shall ensure that inmates that are released in the course of this program are properly rehabilitated to prevent a re-occurrence.
I want to use this opportunity to inform the world that NBM of Africa is a lawful organization and does not involve in criminality. NBM is not synonymous with black axe or any secrete cult or organization.
We are aware that some impostors and miscreants use the name of our organization to seek asylum abroad under pretence that they are being hunted by NBM. It is unfortunate that the authorities do not investigate these claims before granting such disgruntled elements asylum. NBM of Africa will not hesitate to institute legal action against any individual or corporate body that does anything to tarnish its reputation henceforth.
Though this occasion is not a material donation event but a de-congestion initiative, we felt it will not augur well if we come here without contributing few materials to the prison facility, knowing that the government cannot do it all. It is in this light that I present to the DCP In charge of Ikoyi Prisons, 18 pieces of industrial wall fans, some antiseptic soaps and sanitary pads. We believe that this will go a long way to prevent the spread of diseases usually caused by congestion of the cells and lack of ventilation and to also assist female inmates.
We hope that we will be able to identify other areas that we will be able to collaborate with the prisons before the end of today’s event so as to make the prisons service better for the society.
